It's good for what it is, though I've flipped through Mollison's "Designer's Manual" previously, and I kind of wish I would have bought that instead. Ignoring comparisons with other books, Gaia's Garden is very informative, and it's given me a few ideas for my own garden.

I love Sunset Magazine and was excited when I found out about this book. I own Sunset's "The Edible Garden" (2005), which is my favorite gardening book. As I suspected, Sunset's "Western Garden Book of Edibles" (2010) is an updated version of the prior book. It has 304 pages, as opposed to the 194 of the earlier book. Recent readers of Sunset Magazine will recognize some of the pictures in the new book.

I think this book is very useful. It is just beautiful to look at as well, which is important to me. I love their comprehensive climate zone information; all 32 zones! The book is also full of inspiration, especially for gardeners with challenges, like apartment dwellers. The majority of the book consists of individual listings of plants in six categories: vegetables, herbs, berries, fruits, nuts, and...

Good resource for the beginning gardener. Not advanced enough for my needs, but still enjoyed the book. Great for the just starting grower.

Good book - answers the question "Why does my garden fail again and again?" very well. Very detailed explanations on how to get things done yourself and make it work. It does get a little technical - this is definitely not "Gardening for Dummies."

The first part of the book is the how-to of preparing or building the beds, and I was at first disappointed that the remainder of the book discusses certain vegetables in detail. I discovered that I still had things to learn from the author, and I plan to use this method for at least half of my gardening.

This is an all-in-one guide to growing food plants in containers. It is useful for someone who has never gardened before, with short but informative explanations of what potting soil is, which fertilizer to use, and what sort of pots to look for.

The section covering plant choices is organized alphabetically and provides some suggestions for plant types. The suggestions are helpful, since these women actually know which plants will really thrive in a container. They don't advise you to force a larger plant into a container and hope it works; they let you know which plants enjoy being rootbound, which ones sprawl too broadly, etc. Sprouting temperatures are given, so you can decide for yourself when to plant based on the climate where you live.

There are nice little sections inserted throughout giving...

Excellent book and great plant resource. I had to buy this book for a Plant ID class at the community college, but I know I will be using it well after the class has been forgotten! The full color pictures in the front section are organized by use and type. You can find a plant for a specific use and then go read about the plant in the plant data section.

I have grown vegetables since I was a kid. I have gardened when my Dad had to force me to do it, I have gardened when I had to force my own children to do it and I have gardened when it was just my wife and me pushing each other to do it. After reading this book last year AND FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES IN THE BOOK, I have never been so happy with vegetable gardening! We only grew what we would eat, we didn't grow too much or too little- except for too many cabbages- and I can't wait for planting season next month. I have never harvested so much with so little time invested- especially so little weeding- or have had a garden that I was proud to have family and friends look at. I finally enjoy all aspects of gardening instead of just the joy of grazing my way through the garden during the harves...

This is the first gardening book that I've found so enticing on a Sunday that I read it - before the New York Times. And, that's a good thing. I tend to wait until too late into the year to plan my garden and start my preparations. Not this year, not with this book! I've already highlighted major sections and transferred a lot of notes onto the seed packets that I purchased (when to plant them inside, when to plant them outside, where to put them in the garden ...). It's well written, it's opinionated and if anything in my garden this year turns out as good looking as what I see at Gilbertie's Herb Garden in Westport, CT, I'll be thrilled!
